You're going to love this pool house re-do!

So when our friend Susan told us that she was renovating her pool house I pictured the typical, safe beach theme that everyone uses.  You know it what I'm talking about; the fish, the shells, the aqua color on the walls, fake surfboards, Hawaiian flowered bedding, etc.  Boy did I guess wrong!  She managed to create a multi functional open space that is both comfy and stylish by using a little creativity and some color common sense.  As soon as I walked into the space I thought, "My customers are going to love what she did!"

Not only does Susan make awesome décor, gifts, and jewelry for our store and for her website (Knollwoodlane.com), but apparently she can decorate like a pro!  Who knew??

Above is the outside. Gorgeous.

Below are 2 bronze goats that were her Mom's.  This is definitely a family of animal lovers.

When you walk in, you can see this big open room to your left.  The first thing that strikes you is how clean it feels.  She decided to go with white walls and ceilings so that any color in the room would pop out.  Sometimes color used sparingly can have even more of an impact than a lot of bold choices.

The bathroom to the right has a vintage chandelier she got from her mother-in-law and sprayed white.  She hung a bright blue bookshelf on the wall to house all of the colorful towels.  I love that she went with white for the chandelier because she knew she'd have a lot of color in the towels.

The first thing that happened when I walked in with my camera was that the puppies followed me and wanted to be a part of the fun.  Here's Grits posing on the sofa that Susan slipcovered in dropcloth.  Yes, dropcloth from the hardware store.  It's super cheap and once you wash it, it's soft enough to sit on.
All of the curtains are also made from dropcloth!
Since she had a huge space, she got 2 rugs from Ballard Design and turned them to make them fit the space.  I love the touch of chevron.

Once Grits got his photo op, Daphne had to get in on the action.  Here's the little stinker on the zebra chair we found during a trip to market.  I love that she wasn't afraid to put a zebra patterned chair with a chevron rug.  Most people are afraid to mix patterns together but it looks amazing!  Isn't Daphne cute?!?!?!

If you're curious about the pillows, Susan makes them!!  We have a ton of her wonderful creations in the store but she also has a website.  Here's the link to her pillow page.  She doesn't have the one with her family's last name on the site but I'm sure she'd make you a custom one if you sent her a message!

And now onto one of the coolest things about the space; the bunkbeds! See how she angled the chairs in front of the bunk beds to section off the areas?  My mom always says that people need to avoid "circling the wagons" or, in other words, placing all of the furniture around the room against the wall.  Let your furniture create divisions in a large room.  I know it can be tricky but once you scoot it into the right place, you'll look like a design expert.

The built in bunkbeds are cool for so many reasons.  First, Susan made the headboards herself.  She used plywood, batting, and dropcloth.  She prints a lot of fabric for her business, knollwoodlane.com, so she printed these adorable silhouettes of her dogs on each headboard.  Then she just attached them to the wall above the bed.  How cool!!  We found the bedding from one of our wholesalers at market.  I love the texture.

Don't you want to climb up there and have a sleepover?

Here's a closeup of the little crown detail she put on the sides of the bunkbeds.

Next to the bunkbeds, Susan had her carpenter build some shelving and storage with a hidden murphy bed in the center.  For the front of the cabinet that houses the bed, she used the front of an old wardrobe she got from The White Rabbit.  She also got the metal M from us.  We sell so many of those!  They're really cool!

Susan also made a little study area with a shabby table and aqua chair.  I love that she left the table totally chippy.  There is a touch of blue in the paint so it goes great with the lamp and chair.

There is even an area with a dining table and chairs.  The bright chandelier above the table is probably my favorite part of the room.  I thought she was a little crazy when we ordered it at market because it is SO bright but now I see how fun it is in the space.  When you use a lot of neutrals, I think it's important to put in some color to keep the space from feeling too serious.
Hanging the chandelier above the table also illustrates how you can ground an area by hanging something above it.  Even though there aren't any walls separating the dining/living/sleeping areas, it feels separate because the chandelier sort of "owns" the dining space.  The living room feels separate because the sofa is in the center with it's back to the rest of the space.

Don't you just want to get a couple of girlfriends together and play in there??  You could get out some magazines, lounge around looking at Pinterest, and eat some sort of dessert.  Her daughter is in her teens and she gets to have friends spend the night in here.  So jealous!

I hope you love Susan's pool house as much as I do.  I think it's a great example of mixing new and old elements, using creativity to save a little money, and putting really personal touches into a design.  What a fun space!
Susan makes a lot of things for our store and has just started her own website, Knollwoodlane.com.  Please check it out and tell her Angie and Lindsay sent you!

Knollwood Lane Handmade Goods

Ok, I know I've written a blog about Susan Medart and Knollwood Lane before, but she just has the coolest stuff and we love her so much so I can't resist!  She's been having trouble getting her website going so you can pretty much only find her handmade goodies at The White Rabbit.  She makes everything from t-shirts to jewelry, to stationary, and baby gifts.  And her cards!!  We cannot keep her cards in stock because they are so awesome, funny, and often hand-glittered.

These are some of her t-shirts for adults.  They're $24 and you can order any size with whatever image you fall in love with.

These are the little girl version.

Her placemats pictured below have been featured in a local magazine.  We sell a TON of these because families like to buy each member of the family their own royal placemat.  (We sell more Queen than anything!)  The best part?  They're only $10 each.  Give us a call or email if you want one and we'll send it right out to you.

Is there anything she doesn't make?  I have one of these clipboards that I take to market in Atlanta that I clip all of the orders onto.  I get tons of compliments on it!

Ok, these have me really excited.  She has been putting vintage images of St. Louis on gift items.  These are flying out as fast as they come in.  Do you recognize all of the places?

Susan makes notecards for pretty much anything.

These hopsack Christmas items sold faster than anything I think we've ever had in the store.  I don't think she can get the material for them anymore but they were just too cool.

Bling collars!  She puts images inside of the metal circles and attaches them to leather dog collars.

A darling Boston Terrier necklace.

Here is a pillow fit for a queen.

See the adorable little boy below?  That's Johnny, our employee Emily's son!  He's wearing one of Susan's vintage car t-shirts.  He was a great little model for us!  She can make this shirt in any size.

Another shirt with an old car.

This is a collection of her burp cloths.  They're so soft and wonderful.  And you can wash any of her creations.  You just can't iron directly on the images.

Sweet pillows for a baby room.

Handmade barrettes.  She even put our bunny logo on one of them!

The two suitcases below are so fun for decoration or to carry a few little toys inside of.
Wittle giraffe with a bowtie :)

She made a matching bib and onesie for this one to make it a gift set.

This little fire house lights up!  It's a cute night light for a boy's room.  I can't imagine how long it took her to make this.

How can you resist these sweet little bibs?  I think this image was from an old picture book.

Another really cute thing from Knollwood Lane is her bucket gift sets.  She can pretty much put any image on the bucket and then she makes a matching onesie and burp cloth.  Voila, instant gift!

Order these notecard sets with any name you'd like on the front.  They make a really nice stocking stuffer!

If you've ever been in The White Rabbit, you know how many different Knollwood Lane items we have all over the store.  It's pretty much our best line of vintage inspired goods.  If you see anything you like here, just let us know and she can custom make whatever you want.

I hope we carry Susan's creations for a very long time because they truly give our store that locally made feeling you only get in a great boutique.  Let us know what you think and thanks for reading!

An Interview with Artist, Designer, and Mom, Susan Medart

I've often remarked that The White Rabbit wouldn't be The White Rabbit without our favorite local designer, Susan Medart of Knollwood Lane.  My mom and I have gotten to know this creative St. Louis native as a friend as well as business connection, and want our blog readers to get to know her too.  We treated ourselves to a wonderful dinner at Cardwells the other night while we interviewed her.  I'm not going to lie; it was a great excuse to have a glass of wine and giggle for several hours, but we stuck to the task at hand and got some great answers to our questions

Susan's handmade notecards

LM-How did you get started creating handmade goods?

SM-I would literally wake up in the middle of the night with ideas of things I wanted to make.  I started out making for friends and gradually began doing trunk shows with decoupaged goods.  At the time, my kids were younger and it was taking too much time away from them, so I stopped doing the trunk shows and started looking for a store to carry my creations.

LM- Why did you pick The White Rabbit to carry Knollwood Lane?

SM- The second I walked in, I liked it.  It had the vintage inspired look that would work perfectly with my vintage images.  There was a bucket with an image in the baby section, and I looked at the price and thought, "I could make that cheaper for them."  And that was the beginning.

LM-How old are your kids now?

SM- My oldest, Griffin is 17, Mason is 15 and my daughter Hayden is 12.  They're very supportive now that they're older.

LM-Is your husband supportive of your business?

SM-He is a very patient person.  We've been married 20 years and  he still buys my ink, replaces my paper supply, and changes the light bulbs in my studio.

Adorable hair clips for little ones

LM-So how did you come up with the name Knollwood Lane?
SM- Knollwood Lodge is a peaceful, private, secluded lodge on a lake in Wisconsin that's been in my family for many years and it's on Knollwood Lane.  It's a magical place full of antiques that inspires me.

LM- What else inspires you?

SM- I love Country Living.  Sometimes it's just an image that inspires me.  I'll see something and think, what can I do with that?  Sometimes a place can inspire me.  Like, when I go to Florida, I want to make all kinds of beach inspired things.

LM- Do you have a favorite creation?

SM- I think my suitcases are my favorite.  They are all of my favorite things: Simple, cute and old fashioned.
My favorite images are the brown puppy because I love dogs, the leaping lamb because it's sweet, and the Boston Terrier because it makes me laugh.

LM-My mom and I are a little obsessed with your workshop. Can you describe it for our readers?

SM-We put an addition on the house specifically for my workshop.  It has a large table in the middle for messy creating and around the outside is the "stuff."  I basically filled antique vases and found objects (from her travels in Wisconsin and The White Rabbit of course) with things like ribbon, paper, glitter and fabric scraps.  There is also a computer filled with vintage images that I use on almost all of my art.

Here are some pictures of the workshop so you can see for yourself how fun it looks!

LM- What is your dream for the future of Knollwood Lane?

SM- I want to do it until it's a job.
We hope you stop in to see Susan's newest projects in the store soon!  She brings her new creations to The White Rabbit almost weekly.  She also loves custom orders and welcomes a challenge.  We also plan to do a trunk show for Christmas, so stay tuned for the date! -Angie and Lindsay
